Annual Physical Q & A

What is an annual physical?

An annual physical helps your doctor monitor your overall health and identify potential health issues before they become problematic. Diligent Medical Care, PC, uses the annual physical to:

  • Identify possible disease or illness for early treatment
  • Discuss any symptoms you experience
  • Keep immunizations up to date
  • Evaluate nutrition and exercise routine

You can establish a long-term relationship with your doctors to help identify potential health problems in the earliest stages by visiting the same practice for your annual physical each year.

Do I need to prepare for an annual physical?

To make the best of your time with Diligent Medical Care, PC, prepare some information prior to your appointment, such as:

  • A list of medications, vitamins, and supplements you take
  • A list of any symptoms or pain you’re experiencing
  • A list of medical procedures and the dates you received them
  • Results from any recent medical tests

The annual physical is also the appropriate time to ask questions about your overall health, nutrition, and fitness. It’s helpful to make a note of any questions ahead of your appointment to ensure you don’t forget to talk about them with your doctor.

What happens during an annual physical?

Your annual physical starts with a written medical history and discussion of medications, allergies, and symptoms you may have. The nurse or doctor takes your weight and vital signs and may ask questions about your lifestyle habits, such as whether you smoke, drink alcohol, or exercise regularly.

Then, your doctor conducts a thorough exam and may request blood work to evaluate your health. Typical physical exams for adults include:

  • Diabetes screening
  • Immunizations
  • Women’s health evaluation (such as a pelvic exam and Pap smear)
  • Men’s health evaluation (such as a testicular exam and screening for prostate cancer)
  • Medication management
  • Weight management
  • Chronic disease screening
  • Vision screening
  • Hearing screening
  • Health risk assessment
  • Mental health screenings

Your Diligent Medical Care, PC, provider determines additional screenings as necessary based on your symptoms, overall health, and your age.

What are employment physicals?

Some industries require pre-employment physicals to ensure employees are healthy enough to perform the duties of their job safely. Many industries also require employees to receive an annual employment physical, such as those working in home care, health care, or transportation.

Even if not required by national or regional regulations, some employers offer no-cost health check physicals to employees to improve workplace safety and wellness.

If it’s time to schedule your annual physical or you need a school or employment physical, schedule your appointment with Diligent Medical Care, PC, online or by calling the practice today. You can easily book an appointment at a time that works in your schedule.
